Travelers often tie colorful ribbons, scarves, or bows to their luggage so they can spot it quickly on the baggage carousel. While this trick may seem practical, baggage handlers say it can sometimes create unexpected problems during the baggage handling process. According to airport workers, anything attached to a suitcase that is not part of its original design may interfere with automated systems or require additional inspection, increasing the chance of delays.

Many modern airports rely on automated scanners and conveyor systems to sort thousands of bags every hour. Large ribbons, loose straps, or decorative accessories can occasionally become caught in conveyor belts or make it harder for automated equipment to process luggage correctly. If the system cannot scan or move a suitcase properly, airport staff may need to remove it for manual inspection, slowing its journey to the aircraft.

Another issue involves baggage identification. While a bright ribbon makes a suitcase easier for its owner to recognize, it may also hide or partially cover baggage tags or barcode labels if tied in the wrong place. Since these labels are essential for routing luggage to the correct destination, any obstruction can increase the likelihood of processing delays.

Some experienced baggage handlers also recommend avoiding excessive decorations because they can attract unnecessary attention during security screening. Bags with multiple accessories may receive extra visual inspection simply because they differ from standard luggage. This does not mean they are unsafe, but it can add time during busy travel periods.
