They can develop in areas where the skin repeatedly rubs against other skin, clothing, or jewelry.

When should you pay attention?

A typical skin tag is soft and relatively stable.

If a lump suddenly changes color, becomes painful, bleeds repeatedly, or grows rapidly, it should be examined rather than assuming it is simply a wart.

Do not attempt to cut it yourself. Doing so could result in bleeding, infection, or scarring.

2. Enlarged lymph nodes

The neck contains numerous lymph nodes that are part of the immune system.

When the body fights an infection, the lymph nodes may become temporarily swollen.

Common triggers include:

• Colds
• Sore throat
• ear infections
• dental infections
• Tonsillitis
• skin infections

A swollen lymph node may feel like a small lump under the skin, rather than a bump on the surface.

It can also be somewhat sensitive to touch, especially during an infection.

In many cases, the lymph nodes gradually return to their normal size as the underlying disease improves.
