14. Thyroid-related lumps
Not all lumps on the neck originate from the skin.
The thyroid gland is located in the lower front part of the neck.
Sometimes, thyroid nodules can cause a noticeable lump or swelling.
Many thyroid nodules are benign, but they should be evaluated when they are first discovered.
A healthcare professional may use:
- Physical examination
- blood test
- Ultrasound
- Further investigations when appropriate
Don’t assume that every lump in the lower part of the neck is a swollen lymph node.
15. Salivary gland problems
The neck and jaw area contains several salivary glands.
Problems affecting these glands can sometimes cause swelling or lumps.
Possible causes include:
- Blocked salivary ducts
- Salivary stones
- Infection
- Inflammation
You may notice bloating that becomes more noticeable at mealtimes.
Pain, fever, redness, or difficulty swallowing may indicate the need for a medical evaluation.
16. Why location matters
The location of the bundle can provide useful clues.
Under the jaw
Possible causes include problems with the lymph nodes, salivary glands, dental infections, or skin conditions.
Along the side of the neck
Enlarged lymph nodes are a common possibility, especially after an infection.
Back of the neck
Skin conditions, cysts, lipomas, or irritated hair follicles may appear here.
Lower front collar
Among the possibilities are thyroid-related problems.
Skin surface
Skin tags, acne, folliculitis, cysts, and other dermatological conditions may be involved.
The location alone does not allow us to determine the cause, but it helps to guide the investigation.
17. What does it usually feel like to touch a harmless lump?
There is no single physical characteristic that can prove that a lump is harmless.
However, some benign growths may be:
- Gentle
- Smooth
- Mobile under the skin
- Of stable size
- Painless
For example, lipomas are usually soft and mobile.
Some cysts are smooth and well-defined.
But appearance and texture alone are not enough to diagnose a lump .
It is possible that a health professional may need to examine him.
