On her first day at the new shelter, one of the police officers went to visit her. He found her petting an old dog that had fallen asleep on her lap.
“You know what?” he said, smiling. “When we received the complaint, I was convinced we were going to uncover something terrible.”
Lidia looked at him calmly and replied in a low voice:
—And they discovered it. Loneliness. That’s the most terrible thing.
Then he smiled and added: “Fortunately, sometimes it can be overcome with a little kindness.”
