White “worms” in strawberries? What happens when you soak them in salt water and are they still safe to eat?

Why does salt water make them come out?

Saltwater creates a hypertonic environment, meaning it has a much higher salt concentration than the larvae’s internal environment. Through a process called  osmosis , water leaves their bodies, irritating them and forcing them to leave the fruit in search of a more favorable environment.

It is essential to understand that:

  • Salt water  does not create the larvae : it only makes them visible.
  • Ordinary water, without salt, generally does not achieve this effect.
  • Salt is the key ingredient to trigger the osmotic reaction.

How to make a salt bath correctly

If you want to check if your strawberries contain larvae or simply prefer to remove them before eating them, follow this simple method:

  • Dissolve  1 teaspoon of salt  in approximately  4 cups of cold water .
  • Submerge the strawberries for  10 to 15 minutes .
  • If larvae are present, they will begin to emerge within a few minutes.
  • Rinse well with clean water before eating.
