Swelling of the feet in older adults: common causes and prevention

A common cause is poor circulation, especially in people who sit or stand for long periods. Another possible reason is chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which the veins in the legs have difficulty returning blood to the heart. This can lead to swelling, discomfort, and sometimes skin changes around the ankles.

Some medications can also cause swelling as a side effect. Drugs used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or inflammation can contribute to fluid retention. In some cases, swollen feet may be related to more serious health problems, such as heart, kidney, or liver disease.
