What’s the correct way to hang toilet paper? The family debate that was settled by an 1891 patent

It may seem like a trivial question, but few domestic arguments have divided families as much as this one: should the toilet paper hang  over the top  of the roll or  behind it ? The curious thing is that there is a document from the late 19th century that, according to many experts, settles the debate once and for all.

A debate older than you might think

Since toilet paper rolls became popular in homes, people have developed strong preferences about how to hang them on the toilet paper holder. Surveys conducted in various countries show that most people prefer to hang the paper  from the front  (outwards), while a significant group prefers it to hang  from the back  (towards the wall).

Those who advocate placing the roll with the paper hanging outwards highlight several advantages:

  • Improved hygiene:  fingers only touch the paper to be used, without touching the wall or the back of the roll, where germs could accumulate.
  • Easy to find the end:  the edge is visible and accessible, without needing to search for it by feel.
  • Presentation in hotels:  establishments usually fold the tip into a triangle to indicate that the room was cleaned, and this only works if the paper falls forward.
  • Cutting convenience:  it is easier to tear the paper with one hand.
