The real causes of mucus in the throat: what your body is trying to tell you

That annoying feeling of having mucus accumulated in your throat , the constant need to clear your throat, or the sensation that something is stuck can be very uncomfortable. Although it’s often associated with a simple cold, it can actually have different causes.

1. Colds and respiratory infections

Viruses that cause colds or flu can increase mucus production as a defense mechanism of the body. This is usually accompanied by nasal congestion, cough, or sore throat.

2. Seasonal allergies

Pollen, dust, dust mites, or pet dander can cause the body to produce more mucus. This can cause postnasal drip , when mucus runs down the nose into the throat.
